“Walking the Road”

From the series “Thanks for the Feedback” exploring the folklore developed by incarcerated youth in the troubled teen industry. “Walking the road” is the phrase students use to describe escaping or running away; what staff call AWOL. Here we see a heroic teen stash a go-bag and removing the battery from the window alarm before waiting for nightfall to make her escape. She silently runs through the woods and crosses an endless crossroads in the dark. She risks life, death, and the threat of being taken back to the program as she tries to hitchhike and begin the months-long journey home.
